This is a two day Boater Education class. Participants must attend both days to complete the class. A test will be given on the second day of class. You must pass the test to earn your boater safety certificate. Click below to register for one of the two available class dates.

The newly named Don Van Zile & Russ Murphy Boater Safety Classes will honor our late Past Commodore, Russ Murphy, who spent years organizing the class at PYC. A special thank you to Joann Murphy for leading the planning effort, allowing our club to can continue offering this important class.
The primary goal of the boater safety education course is to develop knowledgeable, safe, and responsible boaters. Topics covered include general boating and water safety, navigational rules, causes and prevention of crashes, operation and fueling techniques, environmental concerns and reporting responsibility.
Any motorized boat operator born after June 30, 1996, is required by law to pass an approved boater safety course and to carry a boater safety certificate. In addition, boater education is also required for all PWC operators born after December 31, 1978. This boater education course is open to the public and taught by Tim Simon of the Oceana Sheriff’s Department.
In person, traditional classroom setting
Written test on the second day (80% or better to pass)
No minimum age requirement; however, students under 10 years of age shall be accompanied by a parent, legal guardian or other adult approved by parent or legal guardian.
