For more than 90 years, Pentwater Yacht Club has been a gathering place for people who share a love of boating, friendship, and life on the water. Founded in 1935, PYC began in a waterfront lumber warehouse overlooking Pentwater Lake, just a short distance from the channel leading to Lake Michigan. What began as a place for boating enthusiasts to gather soon became an important part of Pentwater's summer traditions. Through the decades, generations of members have enjoyed sailing, power boating, racing, dining, and social activities. But perhaps the club's greatest tradition has been the friendships and memories created along the way.
PYC's original clubhouse served members for more than eight decades. Its rustic character, waterfront setting, and spectacular views made it a beloved landmark. As the building aged, however, its structural condition became a growing concern. Following extensive evaluation, the club made the difficult decision to replace the historic structure.
In 2022, PYC opened a beautiful new clubhouse on the same waterfront site. The new facility preserved the club's connection to Pentwater Lake while providing modern dining, gathering, and recreational spaces for future generations.
Although the building has changed, the spirit of PYC remains much the same: a welcoming place where members come together to enjoy the lake and one another's company.
Over the years, Pentwater Yacht Club has developed a rich calendar of activities that reflects both its boating heritage and its social traditions. Sailing races and regattas celebrate the club's roots on the water, while events such as the Wooden & Classic Boat Show showcase the beauty and history of recreational boating.
One particularly memorable tradition is the Back from the Mac Party, which began officially in 2000. Originally inspired by an impromptu gathering of sailors returning from the Chicago Yacht Club Race to Mackinac, the celebration grew into a popular stop for visiting racing crews and a highlight of the PYC summer season.
Just as important are the everyday traditions: sharing a meal, enjoying a sunset over the channel, volunteering at an event, or reconnecting with friends after another Michigan winter.
Pentwater Yacht Club is a private, not-for-profit membership organization dedicated to promoting boating, water sports, recreation, good fellowship, and activities for young people. Member participation has always been central to the club's success. Volunteers contribute their time and talents to sailing programs, special events, committees, and the many activities that make each season memorable. That spirit of involvement has helped PYC remain a vibrant part of the Pentwater community for generations.
As Pentwater Yacht Club approaches its centennial in 2035, we celebrate the people, traditions, and shared experiences that have shaped our history. From the original waterfront warehouse to today's clubhouse, PYC has continued to evolve while preserving what matters most: our connection to the water, our friendships, and our sense of community.
We look forward to the next chapter—and to many more memories made on the lakes.
