Submitting pictures

Submitting pictures

First, if possible, all pictures should be in landscape (horizontal) format. This makes them easier to publish, and makes the resulting web page look neater.

Pictures add a lot to the website. To submit a picture for publication, it should be in a digital format, preferably JPEG. JPEG files usually have the extension .jpg.

If you are using a digital camera, the files are probably already in JPEG format. If you are scanning in film-based photographs, the scanning software will probably give you the option of storing as .jpg files.

Digital photos will usually have filenames like P0000001.jpg. If your rename the files, please don't include spaces. For example, use john_and_mary_at_the_falls.jpg rather than john and mary at the falls.jpg. The webserver chokes on names with spaces.

If you need to touch up the color or contrast of your images, I suggest using LView Pro (www.lview.com). To my eye, some digital photos need to be tweeked for added brightness and contrast. Try using the Logarithmic Brightness function, as well as Brightness and Contrast. If you have suggestions about tweeking, I'll be happy to add them here.

This program will also allow you to convert files from other formats, eg .bmp, into .jpg files.

Send the files as email attachments, with any captions, to dlr@eolas.com.
